How long did a nazarite vow last

There were different reasons for taking the Nazarite vow. The vow was taken also for the fulfilment of a wish, such as for the birth of a child Naz. Some said: "I shall not die before I have become a Nazarite" Ned. A shepherd who saw a lock of his own beautiful hair reflected in the water, and was tempted thereby to sin, took a Nazarite vow Tosef.

Although Nazariteship was marked by asceticism, many abstained from wine and meat even without taking the vow B. Because of this some prominent rabbis who were opposed to asceticism regarded as sinners those who fasted or became Nazarites or took any vow whatsoever, and held that the person in question was an evil-doer, even if the vow was fulfilled Ned.

Women and slaves, who did not have full rights before the religious law, could take the Nazarite vow, but only with the consent of their husbands or owners, while the vow was not valid among the heathen Naz. Fathers were allowed to dedicate minors, but mothers were forbidden to do so ib. The proper name "Nazira" may be connected with some such custom Gen. Jesus is said to have been dedicated while still in the womb Luke i. Tradition regards not only Samson and Samuel, but also Absalom, as Nazarites, the last on account of his long hair Naz.

The duration of Nazariteship was voluntary, and ranged from one hour to a lifetime. In the former case, however, it really lasted for thirty days, which was also the period when no definite time was set ib.

While the usual time was thirty days, two or more additional vows were generally taken, in which case each period was regarded as a separate Nazariteship, to be immediately followed, when duly completed, by the succeeding one Maimonides, "Yad," Nezirut, iii.

The period was at times measured by the number of days of the solar or the lunar year Naz. A Nazarite for life might cut his too abundant hair once a year, but a Samson Nazarite might not cut his hair under any circumstances, although he might defile himself by touching a corpse ib.

While no comb was allowed to touch the hair, it might be cleansed and arranged by other means ib. A proverb says, "Let the Nazarite go around the vineyard, but let him not approach it" Shab.

Nazarite vows were taken also outside of Palestine Naz. In the Book of Hebrews, St. Paul writes: "He says first You did not want what the Law lays down as the things to be offered, that is: the sacrifices, the cereal offerings, the burnt offerings and the sacrifices for sin, and you took no pleasure in them; and then he says: Here I am!

I am coming to do your will. He is abolishing the first sort to establish the second. And this will was for us to be made holy by the offering of the body of Jesus Christ made once and for all. In this sense all New Covenant believers serve God as perpetual Nazirites who are not defiled by death for our Savior has conquered death.

In our vow of holiness we offer our lives as a living sacrifice in service to Christ: "I urge you, then, brothers, remembering the mercies of God, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, dedicated and acceptable to God; that is the kind of worship for you, as sensible people.

Do not model your behavior on the contemporary world, but let the renewing of your minds transform you, so that you may discern for yourselves what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and mature. Therefore, in the order of the Nazirite there is the combined concept of: separation purity in holiness the "crown" of the royal priesthood All three aspects closely connected to the oath of service to God above all other functions in life, each aspect corresponding to the Nazirite's oath of service: Abstaining from wine and all products of the vine separate him or her from normal social occasions and the lure of temporal luxury and excess and is perhaps a reminder of the "fruit" that led man into sin in the Garden of Eden.

The abstention from fermented drink signified that the Nazirite's acceptance of a life of service as opposed to a life of ease [see Jeremiah ]. As God bestows His blessing on us, we must receive it by faith. We must be like Jacob — who would not let go of God until God blessed him. So they shall put My name on the children of Israel : To be blessed by God is to have His name on you — to be identified with who He is and all His nature.

Aaron was commanded to pronounce this blessing over the people of Israel — not over the other nations. Though God blesses all mankind, there is a definite and strong sense in which He has blessing only for His people. We have to join ourselves to Him to gain that blessing.

And I will bless them : God promises to bless in response to this blessing! How appropriate for pastors to pronounce these words over their people! How much more appropriate for every believer to remember that we have a High Priest in heaven who ever lives to intercede for us and to bless us!

He has blessed them with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ Jesus, and it is his wish that they should experience the fullness of this blessedness. This meant that those who promised to serve God in such a way were easily recognizable to other people, as they had long hair, bushy eyebrows, a long unkempt beard, etc. A Nazarite was not permitted to come near a corpse, even if it was from a close family member, so that they would not be rendered unclean Numbers - 7.

After their period of dedicated service as a Nazarite ended, a person had to present burnt, sin and peace offerings at the temple Numbers - They were then to shave their head and burn the hairs, after which they were allowed to return to a normal life.
